Day 129: Fences through time.

Finally, we had some dirt, sand and mud to play in today.  Merna Mora Station has three set 4WD routes on their station, which extends from Lake Torrens to Wilpena Pound in the Rangers the only pastoral land before it hits National Park.  The station has been in the family for over 130 years.   Out of the three tracks one was open so we jumped at the chance to go off road to Lake Torrens.  It was great to finally get off the black stuff and drive through river beds, over sand hills, through a little bit of mud, oh and did I mention the sand.  It was only approx 100km but took over 6 hours to complete.  That includes lunch and stopping numerous times to take photos.  Your head flips from side to side like watching a tennis match, as the beautiful scenery passes you by with the odd emu and roo thrown in for good measure.  There are some really old wells and fences on this property.  Who today would drill through a tree branch come fence post to put the wire through?  It would have taken forever, and yet it still stands today.  Oh, and in the distance is the Flinders Rangers, don’t worry I’ll post a special folder for the Rangers – so you want be missing out, just wanted something a little bit different for today.
