Day 175 - Hinchinbrook way.

Cardwell or Port Hinchinbrook is about the half way mark between Cairns and Townsville.  So after sitting in the car for a couple of hours it is good to stretch the legs.  The passage between island and mainland had a gentle breeze; actually it was a bit more than that as you can see by the palm trees.  But it is always nice to look out over at Hinchinbrook island.  You know home is not far away when you get here.  :)

Day 60 – Moonbeams.

Cardwell Qld
Last day on the road and after travelling over 1,000km felt like we’d been on a long haul flight.  The last pit stop before we reached home was Cardwell.  The foreshore has changed so much since Cyclone Yasi.   After the devastation it now has a different kind of beauty.  Moonbeams silhouette the scarred trees to show their splendour in a different light.  Even a blemished landscape can hold a special kind of gorgeousness.

Day 20 – Pit Stop.

Pit Stop

I have to confess that Cardwell may only be 2 and a bit hours down the road from Cairns, but haven’t been there since the devastation of Cyclone Yasi, and boy even after 18 months there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.  The tranquil waters still lie off shore and the views to Hinchinbrook Island stunning.  Nevertheless, after the total devastation of the Cardwell foreshore and houses, they still have their sense of humour and named the new bar and grill Yasi.  Next time you are passing through support the local community, have lunch, coffee, or even stay the night.  Every little bit helps, it might be a small town (and small things come in great packages) still a beautiful part of Australia.
