Day 136: Wide Open Spaces.

For 4WD’ers the Birdsville Track is one of those ‘tracks’ that you have to put on the ‘to do’ list, of Mecca tracks.  So it might not have the challenging rock climbs, the steep descents etc.  However, it is an amazing part of Australia to travel through, with the recent rains the sand/clay soil has made it interesting for some fellow travellers before us.  We have been travelling it for the last three days from the south to north direction (Marree to Birdsville) and the bottom half only had a wee bit of water on the road.  The rest of the water lies on the sides, but some huge ruts in the road.  Nearly half way is another human watering hole Mungerannie Hotel, not bad.  From there, the top half of the track still has plenty of water crossings which make it fun.  The track runs through the Sturt Stony Desert, a mass of gibber rocks, sand dunes, at the moment green bushes everywhere and wildflowers, remarkable.  On the mouse front, he is still there.  I can only say it is a good thing he isn’t in the beer, yet!  If you have seen that movie ‘Mousetrap’ that pretty much sums up what we are experiencing with our friend at the moment.  It is a good thing we are heading north to the warmer temperatures because I think we are up to the bit where Maddy and I would be shooting down the hill in the bathtub into the frozen lake.
