Day 280 – Solitude.

From the tranquillity of Inle Lake, peace of Kanlahgone village, serenity of temples in Bagan we find ourselves adjusting to city life again.  Yangon the bustling centre of Myanmar, formerly the capital but no more.  Cars take over from bikes, and groovy buses left over from colonial days take to the streets at a cracking pace.  There on the street corner, a monk finds his place.  A place for solitude, tuning out and collecting offerings from people passing by.  The cars continue to fly by, people go about their busy day, yet he still stands.  Yangon is a city of contrast from high tea, to market street food, it has it all.

Day 276 – Monastery walls.

Sunrise slowing creeps through window’s wooden cracks.   Filtering in on the old floors, where the wind howled through the night before.  This morning we say goodbye to a very special village and monastery we stayed in for the past two nights.  No electrical power, no running water, yet we went without nothing.  Treated like kings and queens; the hospitality of this village has been amazing.  Something to be treasured, truly wonderful.

Day 270 – Breaking dawn.

In the streets of Mandalay, the breaking dawn slowly creeps over the sky.  The lines of monks wait, ready to go. Bare foot they walk single file out of the temple to collect their morning alms.  Through the streets of the city, people come to pay their respects, and offer food.  Sun rays break through the clouds, beaming over the streets.  As the monks make their way back to the temple.

Day 269 – Sunset magic.

After a very early start, one hour flight from Bangkok to Yangon, Myanmar.  It was time to drag the bag over to domestic, get our sticker for boarding; bags weighed all together, bus out on tarmac to plane for Mandalay.  Another bus, and then when ended at a magic place called U Pein Teak Bridge. Spans 1.2km across the lake joining two villages.  Temples surround us.  A boat takes us out on the water to catch the sun set behind the bridge, as monks walk on.  Our first day, it is hard to image it will get better than this.  This is definitely a country of surprises and wonder.
