Last year when I visited Kunming there was a lot of construction going on, actually in China as a whole construction goes on, most of the time. Old buildings disappearing and great holes appeared in the ground, ready for new beginnings. This year at the end of the downtown mall is a huge new shopping mall blended with some of the old buildings, and a new street called Jade Street. It’s a shame the old has given away to the new but some of the character remains, which is a great thing.
