Day 241: Walshs Pyramid.

Friend or foe?  Walshs Pyramid stands 922m and is the world’s highest free standing mountain.  Every August, the fit and partly mad run from the near-by town of Gordonvale, up the Pyramid and back to town in one and a half hours.  I was struck by madness twice (within 12 months of each other) and climbed up over rocks, through bush to get to the top and back again; it took 4-5 hours round trip.  The average climbing time is 4 hours for a round trip and that is just from the bottom not Gordonvale.  So my hat goes off to the participants in this race, it is amazing.  The view from the top is incredible, and it is worth the 8km of saying ‘why am I doing this? And Never again!’  Be sure if you ever tackle this monster start early in the morning, plenty of H2O and camera.  Even if it is shrouded in cloud at the top you will feel on top of the world.  The memory and pain of climbing it, seems to fade over time, until someone mentions they want to do it again.  Funny how archived memories then come flooding back and ‘no’ seems to come to mind!
