Day 185: Lotus – ancient times.

Did you know the Lotus flower is the national flower of India?  No, I didn’t either but found that out at a trivia night on Saturday night.  Or that the Lotus flower appeared in legends originating in ancient Egypt, and played an important part of their religion?  It also symbolises purity of heart and mind.   Represents long life, honour, good luck and health.  Not bad for a plant growing from the muddy bottom of a pond/lake, blooming into something spectacular.  I guess they could be classed the ugly duckling of the plant world, and that old saying comes to mind; ‘never judge a book by its cover’.

PS;  This lotus flower is tucking him/herself in for the night, because they close up at night and reopen at dawn.  Well, everybody needs their beauty sleep!
