Day 219: Building of Knowledge.

The City Library of Cairns was formerly the Cairns Council Chambers built in 1929-30 in-between the First World War and Second.  It was at a time when Cairns was transformed from a town to a city and during these years most of the city centre was rebuilt.  It was the third major phase of construction in Cairns during 1920’s and 1930’s.  1924 saw the completion of the rail link to Brisbane (Brisvegas), the Gilles and Captain Cook Highway’s opened and expansion of wharfs.  In part this major spurt in building was because of the cyclones of the 1920’s.  The timber structures built during the gold rush days didn’t quite stand up to the gentle sea breezes, funny that.  Hence the spurt of masonry and substantial reinforced concrete was used to ease the burden of blowing away during a cyclone.  The City Library is now heritage listed.
