Day 352: Boulder Magic.

Even before you see the water at the Boulders 40min south of Cairns, you hear the roar when you get out of the car.  Water rages down the river, through giant boulders.  The traditional lands of the Yidinjy people, they have a beautiful legend of how the Boulders were formed.  In brief it is a story of lost love, and love that could never be between Oolana and Dyga (two different tribes).   They loved and then were separated but Oolana escaped, and threw herself into the river to escape her tribesman.  She formed the boulders and with that the raging foaming waters.  Today her spirit is believed to still be around, and she draws the young to their death in search of her Dyaga.  Present day, the really sad thing is that 17 people have drowned in this area, and 16 of those have been young males.  Beauty and mystery surround the area, it is a wonderful place to visit, just remember to swim in the designated area.  The water, refreshing – check, wake up cold – check, make you sing in a high note – double check BUT well worth the effort to swim in a water hole of an ancient rainforest.
