Day 34 – Little boxes on the beachside.

Brighton Beach Bathing Huts
1862 saw the first of the bathing huts built on Brighton beach on Port Phillip Bay.  By the 1930s there were over 200.  It certainly wasn’t the era of bikini.  The old neck to knees was in full swing, and you needed a place to change for a seaside dip.  During this time though storms battered the shores, and neglect started to take hold.  After a violent storm in 1934, those still standing got moved to the high tide mark.  Where they remain today.  In 1970 the State Government wanted to get rid of them. Call to arms; by council, historical society and bathing box association saw the 82 bathing boxes remain today.
